THIS POSITION HAS AN AREA OF CONSIDERATION LIMITED TO 75 MILES OF THE FACILITY; APPLICANTS OUTSIDE THIS WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED FOR THIS POSITION.

 

 

Note:  The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-5.  The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is in the range of GS-3 to GS-5.  The Professional Standards Board (a peer-review group) will review the selected candidate’s education and experience and recommend the grade and step at which the candidate will be placed.  The salary is based on the grade and step approved for the selected candidate.

The Medical Support Assistant is responsible for performing clerical and administrative support in the coordination, care, and treatment provided of patients in a clinical setting.  Work includes documentation in medical records, utilization of established protocols in the assessment and referral of patients to clinical staff, services, and other services as appropriate.  Other duties include receiving and processing patient for outpatient treatment, scheduling patient appointments and/or assist agency employees as requested.  This position is under the direct supervision of the Primary Care Administrative Coordinator.  Preference given for medical administrative experience.

 

WORK SCHEDULE:  Normal clinic hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.; occasionally (approximately once every 3 months) work Saturday, 8:00 a.m. - 12 noon.  Currently the Saturday duties are overtime or compensatory time.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS:

  • U.S. citizenship.
  • Physical Requirements (see additional information below).
  • Appointees must be proficient in spoken and written English.

 

Foreign Education:  To be creditable, education completed outside the US must have been submitted to a private organization that specializes in the interpretation of foreign educational credentials and such education must have been deemed at least equivalent to that gained in conventional US programs.

 

GRADE DETERMINATIONS for GS-3:

Experience: 6 months of experience in clerical, office or other work that indicates the ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position. OR

Education: Completed 1 year of education above high school (must provide copies of transcripts)

Experience/Education Combination: Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for this grade only.  (Example:  3 months of experience (50%) and 6 months of education above high school (50%) equates to 100%.)(must provide copies of transcripts)

 

GRADE DETERMINATIONS for GS-4:

Experience:  1-year of experience in clerical or office work setting and must have demonstrated the following:  established and maintained medical outpatient and inpatient chart`s; administrative records; verified insurance;obtained and updated medical information from patients; coordinated information and actions related to patient care and services; and scheduled appointments OR

Education:  Completed 2 years of education above high school (must provide copies of transcripts)

 

GRADE DETERMINATIONS for GS-5:

Experience: 1-year of specialized experience where your work experience demonstrates the following duties:  scheduling patient appointments; canceling and re-scheduling patient’s appointments; scheduling consults; entering no-show information; monitoring patient wait lists; preparing for clinic visits; monitoring both inpatient and outpatient appointments; interpreting and verifying provider orders; verifying and updating demographic and insurance information; processing emergency and non-emergency transfers to other facilities/hospitals; performing basic eligibility, co-pays and pre authorization requirements for specific coverage (i.e., TRICARE, sharing agreements, etc.).  OR

Education: 4-years of education above high school (must provide copies of transcripts)

Physical Requirements - Pre-employment Physical:  Functional requirements: moderate lifting and carrying (15-44 pounds); use of fingers; both hands required; walking (0.5 hours); standing (0.5 hours); near vision correctable at 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4; hearing (aid permitted); sedentary for long periods; emotional stability; clear speech; and multi-task (physical/mental).  Work Environment:  Work closely with others or alone; busy office environment.
