SALARY WAGE: $26.81 to $31.29 per hour.
The primary purpose of this position is to provide and exercise leader responsibilities for 6 or more technicians, while performing regular non-supervisory maintenance as an Integrated Equipment Mechanic in support of the Air Force Space Command Inter-Continental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) Minuteman III and Peacekeeper Weapon Systems.
Leads three or more Powered Support System Mechanics; tests, troubleshoots, repairs, adapts, and modifies various unique Nuclear Missile Weapon Systems and components in both Launch and Missile Alert Facilities.
Installs, maintains, repairs, troubleshoots and modifies inoperable or malfunctioning air conditioning units at ICBM missile alert facilities and launch facilities. Modifies, troubleshoots, and repairs missile electronic subsystems such as programmer group, digital data group and systems distribution box containing essential system resistors, rectifiers, switches, relays, capacitors and regulators.
Performs as Team Chief with specific responsibilities to perform complex Missile System site entry and exit procedures, using Missile Entry Control System compounded with a unique Missile Electronic Encryption Device that does not allow for error. Utilize safe practices and procedures, follow established safety rules and regulations, and maintain a safe and clean work environment.
Repairs water leaks, cracks and bulges in steel liner of the Launch Facility Primary Access, Launch Tube, Launcher equipment room, Launch Control Center and Launch Control equipment room liners, electrical, communication and refrigerant coolant conduits using a variety of specialized tools, equipment and hazardous materials.
EXPERIENCE: Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Qualification Standard Handbook X-118C; WG-5378 Powered Support Systems Mechanic, dated September, 1974. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
Ability to lead employees to accomplish Ordnance Equipment Mechanic work.
Skill in operation and repair of complex, Minuteman and Peacekeeper Missile Support Systems to independently inspect, troubleshoot, modify, and repair (AC/DC) electrical systems, subsystems and solid state circuitry.
Ability to read and interpret instructions, blueprints, drawings, sketches, and specifications and to troubleshoot complex problems on large projects and applying prescribed test procedures to determine the depth of component disassembly for repairs and the type and extent of adjustment required and the skill in making precise repairs and alignments.
Knowledge of the Minuteman and Peacekeeper Missile Entry Control and Security Systems and ability to maintain constant alertness and concentration on Nuclear Weapons Systems Safety Rules and Explosive Ordnance handling requirements. Knowledge of the principles of environmental control, pneumatic, hydraulic systems, engines and emergency power generating systems.
Skill in operating specialized electronic, digital test equipment, hand tools, power tools and special test equipment such as ohmmeters, hazardous current meters, and bridge wire resistance meters; also in operating mechanized equipment such as 20 ton mobile cranes, 15 ton forklifts, portable welders, heaters and air compressors.
Ability to work in confined spaces at heights over 50 feet. Knowledge of safety regulations and procedures/policies related to records maintenance and documentation.
PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and or part-time work. You must clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
ADDITIONAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
- Must have a valid drivers license with the ability to acquire a Commercial drivers license.
- Must meet all requirements for a Top Secret Security Clearance.
- Must meet all the requirements of the Personnel Reliability Program (PRP) IAW AFI 36-2104 permitting work on or in close proximity of critical components and/or nuclear devices. Position is Critical PRP Code A.
- Must be able to certify explosives ordnance handling.
- May be required to certify as welder.
- Must be able to acquire CPR certification.
- May be required to certify as Hazardous Materials/Waste Operations and Emergency Response Team Member IAW OSHA 29 CFR 1910-120.
- This is a Testing Designated Position. The employee is subject to random testing for drug use.
- May be required to certify for Processing Chlorofluorocarbon and Halon Chlorofluorocarbon Refrigerants IAW OSHA 40 CFR Part 82, Subpart F.
- Must be able to qualify in firearms shotgun training.
- Must be able to wear Respirator.
- The employee may be required to work other than normal duty hours, which may include evenings, weekends, and/or holidays.
- May be required to train/guide technicians of lower grade.
This position is covered by the Domestic Violence Misdemeanor Amendment (30 Sep 96) of the Gun Control Act (Lautenberg Amendment) of 1968. An individual convicted of a qualifying crime of domestic violence may not perform the duties of the position.
PHYSICAL EFFORT:
Crawling, bending and standing in various tiring and strained positions in very tight places. Requires lifting, carrying and pulling equipment weighing up to 60 pounds on a regular basis. On occasion may be required to assist in lifting and carrying items weighing over 150 pounds. Reaching and working overhead while standing on ladders, scaffolds and elevator work platforms.
WORKING CONDITIONS:
Works in areas of hazardous explosives, rocket engine propellant MMH, toxic vapors and fluids, high noise. High pneumatic and hydraulic pressures and often extreme weather conditions with below zero temperatures, sever winds averaging 50 MPH and wind chills of 40 degrees below zero. Exposure to Hantavirus (a deadly rodent spread virus), dirt, grease, oil and various cleaning chemicals. Will often work at heights up to 90 feet in confined areas. Must comply with missile safety requirements and wear all required safety equipment for each task. All areas within the missile facilities require Two Person Concept at all times. Subject to shift rotation, irregular shifts, and weekend work.
