Field Maintenance Technician (SBS) at Fargo

The Exelis Air Traffic Management (ATM) Group is a recognized and growing entity that provides unsurpassed engineering, implementation, and information solutions for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). We are at the forefront in the FAA’s NextGen long-term programs to replace the current radar-based air-traffic-control system with one that operates using satellites and a global positioning system.

This position to support a newly fielded system. Qualified candidates will be required to work both scheduled and on-call hours if selected for this position. SBSS Field Maintenance Technicians perform preventive and corrective maintenance at designated sites. Preventive maintenance requires semi-annual visits to all assigned sites to check and service all on-site equipment, including radios, antennas, routers, servers, back-up power systems, environmental control systems, and other specialized equipment. Preventive maintenance also includes site housekeeping requirements, as well as planned on-site configuration changes or upgrades. Semi-annual preventive maintenance is expected to take an average of 4 hours per site, plus travel time.

MAJOR JOB ACTIVITIES:
1. Corrective maintenance will be performed as necessary, on an on-call basis. Most corrective maintenance actions are performed by removing and replacing malfunctioning equipment.
2. Required to coordinate with FAA and other Partners in the area for access to sites. Written and Verbal Communication skills are an absolute requirement.
3. May be required to negotiate with 3rd party organizations for travel and lodging assistance at many site locations in the area.
4. The technician will be notified of the required repair, a centralized stocking facility will ship any necessary components to the technician, and the technician will be required to travel to the sites and replace the component within a pre-determined period of time typically within 24 hours.
5. On-site troubleshooting and testing will be performed as necessary. All on-site maintenance activities will be coordinated with the SBSS Operations Control Center.
6. Responsible for maintaining multiple sites. May be called to assist outside of normal area of responsibility
7. An average of 2 call-outs per site per year are predicted. Corrective maintenance service calls are expected to average approximately 4 hours per call-out, plus travel time.
8. Most locations will require access badges or other credentials in order to gain site access.
9. Technicians will work through Exelis to obtain any such credentials, and will be responsible to maintain the currency of any such credentials.
10. Technician will update Configuration Management software with all work load information including details of configuration changes.
11. In some instances it will be necessary to use third parties to complete specific repairs, i.e. antenna repair. The maintenance technician will be responsible for coordinating with Exelis and with these third parties to complete the repair.
12. Technicians will be required to document all maintenance actions at the time of action, and to keep maintenance records current.
13. Performs other duties and assignments as required.

Required:
6-8+ Years directly related experience w/ Associates Degree. 5+ years experience in field service work, with a minimum of 3 years in radio system and LAN/WAN IP Network Devices configuration and maintenance. Some experience with AC and DC power systems required. Generator and A/C maintenance experience desirable. Strong troubleshooting skills required.

Good written and verbal communication skills are required. Experience with 3rd party negotiations are preferred.
Must have basic understanding of office software products such as Microsoft Word, and Excel. Must have basic computer skills to be able to access corporate software with little centralized assistance. Initial training of corporate software will be provided.

Training: Limited SBSS maintenance training will be provided by Exelis. Travel: Valid drivers license and good driving record required. Technician must have reliable transportation. Exelis will pay mileage and per diem for authorized maintenance activities. Other: Background checks and drug testing required. Must be able to work well either alone or in a team environment.
