THE HOURLY RATE IS: $22.00 TO $25.69 PER HOUR
· The primary purpose of this position is to repair, overhaul, modify, test, and install locking devices and to understand their working interrelationship with monitors, alarms, timing mechanisms, sensors, and other related items which make up a complete security or surveillance system. The work includes the manufacture and duplication of keys and the keying and combination of locking mechanisms as well as neutralization techniques to determine if locking devices have been tampered with.
· Modifies and reworks locking devices to accomplish special security objectives designed to work in conjunction with other components and equipment to form a complete security or surveillance system. Establishes and maintains master key coding systems. Plans, coordinates, and implements the key layout of new and renovated facilities throughout the base.
· Performs preventive maintenance on all security type containers such as safes, vaults, and combination file cabinets by detecting malfunctions of the locking mechanism and removing and replacing unserviceable locks, or restoring repairable locks to operating condition by disassembling, cleaning, and replacing worn, bent, or broken parts.
· Makes new keys from duplications, impressions, and key codes from a variety of key blanks. When a pattern is available, places pattern inside key cutting machine and traces new key according to pattern. When key codes are available, uses key combination in duplicating keys. When neither pattern key nor code is available, removes cylinder and measures the length of pin tumblers and then manufactures new key by these dimensions or makes the key by impression method, inserting blank key in lock, obtaining impression from the pins, making file cuts and encodes by applying key gauge to the cuts made.
· Uses and maintains tools. Maintains bench stock levels of parts, materials, tools, and equipment at prescribed levels. Utilizes hand tools such as small files, chisels, hammers, picks, tweezers, screw drills, punches, and grips. Plans and lays out work from blueprints, sketches, specifications, and work orders. Reviews work order requirements to determine the work sequence and selection and use of trade tools and techniques to be applied. Utilizes safety and security practices and procedures following established rules and regulations and maintains a safe, clean, and secure work environment.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:
1. Knowledge of the master key systems; and internal structure and operating characteristics of a wide range of makes, models, and types of common mechanical locking mechanisms and their working interrelationship with related components comprising the locking system of the security units in which they are installed in order to select methods used in neutralizing, troubleshooting, and repairing the locking mechanisms.
2. Knowledge of various types of woods and metals in order to select appropriate tools and equipment.
3. Knowledge of safety regulations, practices, and procedures.
4. Skill in using small hand tools; soldering irons and brazing torches; adjusting and using powered tools common to the trade.
5. Ability to perform visual and operational checks and use dexterity and coordination between hands and eyes to remove broken keys from keyways and open standard locks.
6. Ability to select commonly used neutralization techniques; apply technical manuals, manufacturers diagrams and specifications; and determine work sequence.
PART-TIME OR UNPAID EXPERIENCE: Credit will be given for appropriate unpaid and/or part-time work. You must
clearly identify the duties and responsibilities in each position held and the total number of hours per week.
ADDITIONAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
· May be required to drive a motor vehicle. A valid drivers license may be required for the position.
· May be required to assist other workers in various crafts.
· Shift work and/or overtime may be required.
· Keeps abreast of developments in lock and security systems by regularly reading/reviewing a variety of current publications as well as formal training and correspondence.
Physical Effort: Work seldom requires lifting or carrying of items weighing in excess of 15 lbs. Frequently stands, stoops, bends, kneels, and works in awkward positions when installing and opening locks and emergency exit hardware on-site. May be required to lift security containers weighing up to 50 pounds and heavier weights with assistance.
Working Conditions: Work is normally performed inside in areas that are well lighted, heated, and ventilated. Occasionally, work is performed outside in bad weather or in areas that are drafty and poorly lighted. Possibility of exposure to cuts, scrapes, and bruises. Exposed to the possibility of burns while using acetylene torches, bracing torches, and soldering irons.
