The selectee works with the Chief of Interpretation and interpretive staff and interfaces with other park divisions, partners, and contractors to assist in developing new wayside exhibits using the parks major interpretive themes, as identified in the Long Range Interpretive Plan, for a wide and varied audience. The selectee writes and edits interpretive text for exhibits, uses photographic database to find appropriate photos, takes professional grade photographs, creates illustrations, and produces graphic layouts. The selectee possesses and maintains a sufficient working knowledge of interpretive writing, graphic design, principles of photography, new and emerging technologies, and interpretive techniques.
In addition, the selectee conducts independent research and presents interpretive programs, develops and plans multi-media presentations and exhibits, provides various other programs orally and/or in writing and via new technologies, about park resources and the rules for park use. The selectee employs appropriate interpretive techniques and devices geared to the characteristics and interests of particular audiences. Duties may be performed on or off-site at locations designated by the park, e.g., visitor centers, campgrounds, auditoriums, trails, and special events. The selectee provides visitor services at visitor centers, including park orientation and trip planning, and educates visitors regarding activities that impact the preservation of natural and cultural resources, including issues dealing with visitor safety and emerging resource issues.
Area Information: Theodore Roosevelt National Park is located in the badlands of western North Dakota, and includes the Theodore Roosevelt Wilderness Area. The park consists of three separate units: South Unit, Elkhorn Ranch Unit, and North Unit. The colorful Little Missouri River badlands provide a scenic backdrop to Theodore Roosevelt National Park, which is home to a variety of plants and abundant wildlife, including bison, elk, wild horses, longhorn steers and bighorn sheep.
This position is duty stationed at the headquarters area of the park (South Unit) in Medora, ND (population 100). This is a seasonal town with a variety of services available from Memorial Day through Labor Day. Complete services and a university are located in Dickinson (population 25,000), 35 miles to the east. Summers are warm and sunny with temperatures occasionally reaching above 100 degrees F. Afternoon thunderstorms are common. Winters are invigorating, with temperatures sometimes reaching -35 degrees F. Skies are usually sunny. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-05 level in the federal service. Specialized experience is defined as experience that has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Examples of qualifying specialized experience for this position include, but are not limited to, the following: park guide or tour leader, work in a park, recreation or conservation area, environmental education, history and/or cultural resources education, and natural sciences education. Work will include independent research and presentation; OR
Education: One full academic year of graduate education related to the occupation. One year of full time graduate education is defined as 18 semester hours; OR
Combination of Experience and Education: Appropriate combination of education and experience that is typically specified in the individual occupational requirements. The quality of the combination of education and experience must be sufficient to demonstrate that the applicant possesses the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform work in the occupation. The combination of education and experience must equal at least 100 percent of the requirement.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Work may require extended periods of standing, sitting, walking, vehicular travel, moderate lifting, and speaking. Work will be with constantly changing audiences, such as school groups ranging in age from pre-school to high school, and is physically and intellectually demanding. Travel up to 100 miles from park headquarters is required on a regular basis.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: Work is performed both inside and outside and is subject to variables including snow, rain, high winds, sleet, temperature extremes, and hazardous plants and animals.
